William Sidney Mount (1807-1868)
Long Island's Own!!

William Sidney Mount, Self Portrait, 1832
..
William Sidney Mount (1807-1868) is widely credited for the creation of American Genre Painting. His realistic everyday scenes and popular subject material made him a favourite with both the public and the critics. and was widely held as one of the great American talents of his time.
A Long Island native from Setauket, Mount began his career at seventeen as a sign painter. But soon Mount had moved beyond advertisements to the National Academy of Design as a student of history painting, which led to a decisionto paint portraits and genre scenes. Self-Portrait is an oil on canvas at age twenty-five, early in Mount's prolific career.
