Mick Burdge <mburdge@earthlink.net>
Looking for anyone (other
than BURDGEs) who claims descendancy from:
1 - "John Bordes". This is
the spelling according to "Names of Inhabitants of the Town of Hempstead
1673" (as translated by Vanderkemp from Dutch records; Documentary History
of NY, Vol I, page 658.)
2 - "Jonathan Burdge" of Madnan's
Neck. This spelling according to a deed dated 3 Oct 1681, which was signed
by a mark. (Hempstead Recds., 1:479)
3 - "Jonathan Borge" This
spelling according to 11 Oct 1683 tax list for Hempstead. (Documentary
History of NY, Vol 2, page 523-525)
4 - "John Burges" This spelling
according to 1698 census for Hempstead. (NY Gen. and Biog. Rec. Vol. 45,
p. 54-68.)
These spelling variations are
generally thought to refer to John (or Jonathan) BURDGE, and his sons are
believed to have settled in New Jersey by 1720. His daughter Sarah is believed
to have married Abel WEEKS in 1720.

Robert J. Combs <w2b2i4nb@coastalnet.com>
"Mather's Refugees" mentions
Capt. Samuel Combs with his longboat privateering against Colonists from
L.I. attempting to flee the British and go to Conn. A North Carolina historian
said that he was from N.C. A Samuel Combs sold his birthright in N.C. and
family lore says that he returned to the North, from which his father,
John, and uncle, Robert came. A John and a William returned to N.C. c.
1800, and a Bible record says that their father and mother were Samuel
and Sally. A correspondent wrote years ago that a Samuel Combs was stopped
and questioned in N.Y. City, and said that he was going to visit his uncle
on L.I. David Russell Jack said that a Samuel Combs went to New Brunswick
as a Loyalist from Long Island and was granted land in Paar Town, now St.
John (St. Jean). Is anyone doing genealogical research on the Combs Families
of Long Island? Bob Combs in N.C. I know I descend from Christopher Lupton
who was in Southampton in the 1650's. I believe I have his line.

Maggie Austin <s_maggie_austin@hotmail.com>
I am doing a research paper
on the noted electronics inventor, William Clayton EDWARDS who died in
Roslyn in April of 1989 at the age of 75. This prolific inventor lived
on Long Island for many years. The last years of his life were spent in
Plandome Manor.
Mr. EDWARDS is known for his
work in the field of electronics and held many patents for his important
works. He was the founder of Edwards Electronics Corporation and Edwards
Engineering, both in Glen Head.
This very interesting individual
has not had much attention, and that's one of the reasons I selected him
for my research paper! Any/all aspects of his life would be of interest.
If anyone can help me with my project, I would be exceedingly grateful.
Thank you,
Maggie Austin

I am looking for anything
at all - even advice on how I'd begin to find out details on an ancestor

His name was Ted Burke, possible that his real name was Michael. He was
born in Co. Tipperary, Ireland in the 1860's, later moved to Liverpool,
England before emigrating to Long Island. All I know about him is that
he married an American woman (Maggie?) and had no children. They lived
at the gatelodge of Mackay's estate until death. Has anyone out there had
much luck searching for employees of Mackay? If so, I'd really appreciate
some advice! Hope to hear from you...Anne-Marie

http://www.interlog.com/~spearce
I know a great deal about
Zoar Cock but not what I want to know. He is surely of the Long Island
family of that name I want to know his parents, and his wife's surname.
He was a loyalist who traveled to New Brunswick in 1783 and received a
land grant as Zoar Cook. He traveled with a Jordan Cock (whose land grant
was as Jordan Cook), whom he names as a witness on an application in Loyalist
Records. Jordan is probably the son of Robert (Jame, James) Cock. Zoar
says he is of Westchester in his application. He is a witness for the loyalist
claims of Tertullus Dickenson and Elizabeth Travis widow of William Travis
in Audit Office 12. We see from that and his confiscation that he was of
"Courtland's Manor". I am interested in him because I am filling in background
on Westchester Loyalists trying to connect my ancestor William Pearce with
the William (James, William, Richard) Pearce of Mackenzie's Families of
Philipsburg who married Deborah Cock, she daughter of Josiah (James, James)Cock
and Rebecca Frost. That family of Pearces, according to MacKenzie, is descended
fromWilliam (Richard) Pearce of R.I. who moved to L.I. in 1698/99.
Zoar Cock appears to have been
married to Ruth ------ and seems to have returned to Queens County as he
shows up on the 1790 census there. A daughter is mentioned in Encyclopedia
of Quaker Genealogy. He was a miller.

JARVIS-FLEWELLING-SMITH-BEAL-IRELAND-BRUSH
Mary Ann Jarvis was born in
Huntington LI 19 JUN 1807. She was the daughter of Isaac 5 Jarvis who married
Effalina ? (Flewelling???). Mary Ann had three brothers. Only one is recorded,
Isaiah Jarvis 6 who married Olive Ruth Flewelling. Isaac 5 Jarvis father
was Robert 4 Jarvis and wife Sarah Ireland. Robert had seven children by
Sarah Ireland. She died and he married her sister Margaret (Ireland) Brush
and had two more children. Robert 4 father was Isaiah 3 Jarvis and his
wife Hannah Whitman. Isaiah 3 father was Jonathan 2 Jarvis and his wife
Elizabeth ???. Jonathan Father was Stephen 1 Jarvis and Mary Porter.
Mary Ann Jarvis married probably
about 1828 to Daniel (J???) Smith. He probably born about 1800/1810. They
had three children: 1. Hannah Eliza Smith b) 10 Feb 1829 2. Flewelling
Jarvis Smith b) 4 Jan 1831 3. Edward Rutledge Smith b 22 May 1833.
Daniel Smith died young and
Hannah was left to fend for herself with three small children. She eventually
remarried in 1846, so Daniel Smith died prior to 1846. Family history says
they might have been living in Brooklyn NY at that time of Daniel's death.
Does anyone map to this family.. I have lots more and would like to exchange
information. I am very interested in finding out the parents of Daniel
Smith. Thanks. Don Seattle

Wading River, Riverhead Twnshp
or possibly Oyster Bay area: Looking for the parentage of Daniel Baldwin
who married Rachel ? His oldest son was Reuben Powell Baldwin dob Jan 1,
1865. His only daughter was Alice who is said to have never married. Daniels
other sons were: Charles,Daniel, John, William and Shirley ( yes Shirley)
When Reuben was born, Rachel was only 15 if the 1880 Census from Suffolk
County can be trusted. That would indicate that Daniel ( who was born c.1842)
may have had a first wife. Reuben worked as the Gatekeeper at the Teddy
Roosevelt Estate in Oyster Bay and was relocated by the Roosevelts when
McKinley was shot and Roosevelt assumed the Presidency.

was born in 1849 and was the daughter of Alexander H. Brown and Ruth A.
?. In the 1860 Census, Alexander and Ruth show up in East Moriches with
three children, Frances, Josephine, age 8, and George, age 6. I have no
information on Alexander's ancestors nor do I know what Ruth's maiden name
was. The second involves the mother of my Great Grandmother, Katherine
(Tuttle) Albin. She was the daughter of David Halsey Tuttle and Fannie
E. (Hannah) Brown. Fannie was born abt. 1856-7. I have no confirmed information
on her family at all. However, the 1860 Census shows a Harry Brown, age
37, living in Center Moriches with his wife, Ann, age 27, and two children,
Charles, age 7 and Fannie E., age 4. This is a strong likelihood to be
my GG Grandmother. There is also a possibility that Harry Brown and Alexander
Brown were brothers. Can anyone shed any light on this for me? Oh, one
other thing...
I have traced my Albin line
back to James Albin, who was born abt. 1814 in Manorville. He was married
to Mary Carter. I have no info on his parents or ancestors. Can anyone
help there also?
Thanks!

I hope someone may be able
to assist me in unraveling the mystery of Katie Nolan's origins. I have
read microfilm/fiche at the FHC until my eyes have popped but still haven't
been able to discover her parentage. I think her marriage record may provide
the neccessary information. Is there a marriage index to NYC or Brookln
marriages for the 1875 to 1882 time period?
Katherine Nolan was born 1858
to 1861 in County Roscommon, Ireland and emigrated as a 4 year old child
to NY. This would place her arrival as 1862 to 1865. There is a possibility
that she was actually born in NY but death cert. lists County Roscommon.
She died 3 Jan. 1892 but the date may be 1893 as I have found her in the
1892 state census. She's buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Flatbush, Brooklyn,
Kings, NY. Diedrich Wulf, her husband, purchased the plot. Also buried
here are their son, Willie H.Wulf 1883-1884; Jane Nolan and Mary Nolan.
Jane may be her mother and Mary could be a sister-in-law as Nolan is a
married name.
I have death certificates of
both Diedrich and Katie. Diedrich's is # 156-56-12524r and hers is # 166,
Brooklyn, NY. Date is Jany.3, 1892 but she is enumerated in the 1892 state
census; so, I presume the date is actually 1893. She was 31 years of age;
born in Co.Roscommon, Ireland; in US and Brooklyn for 26 years; both parents
born in Ireland. She lived in Ward 4 at 298 Pearl St on the 2nd floor with
1 family living in house. ( He lived at same address and family also lived
on Sterling St. They lived in ward 4 and then 10.)
( John Wulf, his second wife,
Matilda Payntar Wulf, and other family members are buried in Greenwood
cemetery, 500 25th St., Brooklyn, NY, in lot 28900 Sec. 143 grave # 2.)
John Wolfe is enumerated as
a single male & an alien in 1875 ( 322 Willoghby St.) The 1892 census
is the first census I find them together. As their first child was born
1883, I estimate they married after 1875 but before 1883. Probably about
1880 to 1882. I have read the 1881 through 1884 Brooklyn marriage records
without success.
Their children are:
1) Willie H.Wulf, b. Aug.
1883, d. 31 Aug. 1884, bur. Holy Cross cem.
2) Freidrick Arthur Wulf,
b. 1885
3) Jane Marie Wulf, b. 1887
4) Walter Diedrich Wulf, b.
1889 - my grandfather
All born Brooklyn and last
3 were christened at St.James Pro Cathedral, Brooklyn. Sponsors of her
children's christenings were Patrick Nolan, Mary A. Nolan, Michael Nolan,
Jane Nolan and Mariah Nolan. Do not know where Willie was christened.
Wulf is also spelled Wolf but
Johann Hinrich Dietrich Wulf, who sometimes used John, is consistently
listed as Diedrich Wulf on the baptismal certificates of his children and
Katie is Catherine Nolan. The church is, quote, " St. James Pro-Cathedral
", Brooklyn, NY. ( 250 Cathedral Place. ) The church name is printed on
2 certificates and handwritten on the third. the printed ones were of baptisms
done in 1887 and 1889 but the certificates were written April 24, 1943;
the other baptism occurred 1885 with the certificate written Aug. 12, 1933.
This must be same church as St.James today.
I have not attempted any immigration/citizenship
records for either Katie or Diedrich. I do not know her parents names,
though I suspect they are Michael W. Nolan and Jane ..., and I know the
Wulfs from me back to the middle ages in Prussia and America. He came to
NY about 1870 and she about 1862-65.
All records I have searched
are for Brooklyn and/or Kings county, NY.
1900 Brooklyn Directory lists
Diedrich Wulf as candymaker, work address is 415 Fulton and Willoughby
and home as 298 Pearl st.
In the 1870 through 1910 US
censuses. They were in 4th and , later, 10th Wards. I've read the Kings
county state censuses and the Brooklyn City Directories. I have found the
possibility that Michael W. Nolan may be Katie's father but nothing definitive.
And, I've not found any Kings county census which enumerates Katie, Moriah
( Mary ), or a supposed son, Michael W., in the same household. I do not
know enough about Katie's family to know if I've found them or am in the
wrong area completly.
The 1880 census S.Dist 2, 10th
Ward ED 76, p 19,#34/78 at 190 Bergen St. could be "my" Michael Nolan.
The 1900 census Vol.69,ED 123, Sheet 22, Line 51, enumerates him at 286
Sterling Place with notation " house closed ". ( Sheet 25, Line 01 enumerates
the other Michael W.Nolan, age 41, same address.)
My primary purpose is to determine
Katie Nolan's parents but also want to ascertain her birthplace and marriage
date. I apologize for this query's length and greatly appreciate any advice
or help.
Thanks,
Leila M.

Mrs. Sarah Devitts Falls, my great-grandfather's sister. She lived in Nassau
