Mrs. Hulda E. Ketcham, 102; Amityville's Cheerful Optimist

Amityville, Feb 14 -- Mrs. Huldah Etta Ketcham, who would have been 103 next Sunday, died suddenly today at her home, 111 Broadway, this village. She had been in failing health for only a few days.

Mrs. Ketcham did most of her housekeeping and up to her 100th birthday cooked her own meals and attended three stoves in her home, which was erected nearly 80 years ago by her husband, the late Erastus Ketcham.

She was born in North Amityville, the daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth Smith Van Nostrand, and with the exception of a few months spent in Brooklyn immediately following her marriage, spent her entire life on the South Shore.

On the occasion of her 100th birthday, the Woman's Society of Christian Service of the First Methodist Church here, of which she was a lifelong member, held a celebration in her honor. An optimist and of a cheerful disposition she expressed the hope on her 97th birthday of "being an old lady, some day."

Mrs. Ketcham comes of a family noted for its longevity. A sister, Mrs. Silas Haff, also of this village, celebrated her 99th birthday on Jan. 24 last. Her oldest son, Herman E. Ketcham, who lived with his mother, is 83.

She is survived by four other sons, Chester O., former village president of Babylon, who lives in this village; Silas K., of South Norwalk, Conn.; Vincent K., of Lordship, Conn.; and Rudolph W. of this village; a daughter, Mrs. Huldah Etta Richberg of Mineola; a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Her husband died in 1892.

Obituary

OLDEST RESIDENT Amityville Womas Was Looking Forward To 103rd Birthday

Mrs. Huldah Etta Ketcham of Broadway, Amityville, the oldest resident of Babylon Township, who was looking forward to celebrating her 103rd birthday next Sunday, died Monday in her home, after a few hours' illness. She had been active until that day, and did much of the work in her home. As late as Sunday, she helped to wash the dishes after dinner.

Sister 99 Years Old

Mrs. Ketcham had among her treasures a personal letter from President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 24th president in the White House in her lifetime, which he sent to her on her 100th birthday. The event was an occasion for a village-wide celebration in Amityville and the Babylon town board passed a resolution congratulating her as the oldest living resident. The president's letter will be preserved in the Amityville library.

Longevity is a tradition in her family. Just recently, Mrs. Ketcham helped to celebrate the ninety-ninth birthday of her sister, Mrs. Silas C. Haff of Amityville, who lives in the Bruswick convalescent home. Mrs. Haff has made her home there since she suffered a fractured hip several years ago. The bones knit and now she is able to walk and leave the home on occasion to attend family dinners and to make other visits.

Mrs. Ketcham was born near the end of the term of Martin Van Buren, eighth presiident of the United States, and lived in the vicinity of the village of Amityville all of her life. She sewed for the soldiers during the Civil and Spanish-American wars and her memories of those days was fresh.

She was married to Erastus E. Ketcham, June 22, 1859, a contractor and builder, who died more than 50 years ago, and she lived in the house which he built about 25 years before his death. Cooking, reading newspapers and books and tending her home were her hobbies. She was a member of the First Methodist church in Amityville and the Rev. Karl A. Bermsten, pastor, will conduct funeral rites tomorrow.

Mrs. Ketcham is survived by six children, Herman E., Rudolph, Chester O. Ketcham of Amityville; Vincent D. Ketcham of Lordship in Stratford, Conn.; Silas Ketcham of South Norwalk, Conn.; and Mrs. Andrew Richberg of mineola; 17 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and three great, great grandchildren.
