Generation One

Barnabas (1600-1680)

The heritage of Barnabas Horton has been carried on through the generations from Southold to Salem.  Exactly when he left England and on what ship he traveled has never been proven.  What is known is that he was a man of unquestionable character and great faith, which is shown on his Tablestone and in his will. He became a freeman in Hartford before arriving in Southold where he served as a constable and then as a Deputy to the General Court in 1663 and 1664.  As a founding father of the Town and of the church he was active in the affairs of both, and of the colony.  It is said that he agreed to maintain the lane to the dock, which allowed him to have lots on either side of Horton’s Lane.  In 1640 he received a land grant which included the land on which the Horton's Point Lighthouse now sits.
