West Hills Methodist Episcopal Churchyard

West Hills Methodist Episcopal Chuchyard is located on Jericho Turnpike - NY 25 - in the West Hills section of the Town of Huntington, just to the west of the junction of Jericho Turnpike and West Hills Road. The cemetery is located in the very western part of Suffolk County, a bit to the east of the Oyster Bay Town and Nassau County line. Until the late 1950s, the original West Hills M. E. Church was located in the middle of the cemetery. The church was moved at that time to the rear of the property and the building expanded. A section of the front of the cemetery along Jericho Turnpike was taken by the State to widen NY 25 around 1950.

West Hills M. E. Church dates to 1844. During its early history, West Hills was on a "3 Point Charge" with Cold Spring M. E. Church, Cold Spring Harbor, Town of Huntington, and Woodbury M. E. Church, Woodbury, Town of Oyster Bay. For most of the late 19th century and into the early 20th century, West Hills and Woodbury made up the West Hills-Woodbury Circuit, a "2 Point Charge." In 1939, West Hills became, through a denominational merger, West Hills Methodist Church. A second merger in 1968 created the United Methodist Church of which West Hills is now a part. The current name is West Hills United Methodist Church.

During the early 1900's, Mrs. Scudder made an inventory of the West Hills M. E. Churchyard. Her inventory can be found on pp. 1508-1511 in the "Scudder Collection of Long Island Genealogical Records" at the Huntington Historical Society or on L. D. S. microfilm.

Alice Meigs inventoried West Hills M. E. Churchyard on 3 May 1936. Her inventory can be found in her "Suffolk County Cemeteries, Volume III" found on L. D. S. Microfilm Roll # 0017925.

The following are the lists from Scudder and Meigs. Additional information added by David Roberts, the submitter, is shown in brackets like [   ]. Most of this material was taken from his published "Deaths Reported by the 'Long Islander' 1878-1890" or his on-line "Deaths Reported by the 'Long Islander' 1891-1900" available on-line at this site.
