We Urgently need your Donations to stay online through 2015!
We survive on your donations.  Unfortunately only a small portion of our users donate.  We’re a small self supporting community resource site with the expenses of a top website: servers, programs, equipment, research etc. We really feel Long Island Genealogy is something special. It is your family history library, updated and maintained by a small group of volunteers who have a passion for sharing Long Island's family history information.  If our information has been helpful and you would like it to stay online to help others, please help by making a donation.  Donations can be made either by mail or online by using this Link - Or through the Donate button on the left.
Thank you again for your continued support, and we look forward to continuing our research together in 2015!

This index was created and donated for public viewing by Jeffrey M. Walden.  Jeff is the head of reference at the Mattituck-Laurel Library.

Jeff wished the following acknowledgment be included - This obituary index is a project started at the Mattituck-Laurel Library in the Summer of 1999 and it has been completed thus far with the help of many different individuals.   I would like to thank the following people for their assistance in compiling the information included in this index; April Brazill, Stephanie Bucalos, Emmanuella Fiore, Mary Ann Carcich, Robyn Zaneski, Lynn Maaiki, John Szczotkowski, and Barbara Ann Aug.  While great care was taken to amass this index there may be some unintentional errors or omissions. ...

The Mattituck-Laurel Library has the archives of the Suffolk Times.  Jeff  has volunteered to provide people with copies of the actual obituaries indexed.  Please look over the Index and make a written note of all necessary reference details before contacting Jeff with your requests.  Jeff's offer is very generous, please help him by following these simple suggestions.
The Suffolk Times is the community weekly newspaper that has served the North Fork of Long Island (NY) continuously since its founding in 1857. It is, or has been, the official newspaper of Southold Town, Shelter Island Town and the Incorporated Village of Greenport, where it was based until 1988. That year it relocated to Mattituck, where it shares offices with its sister publication, The News-Review of Riverhead.  (Quoted from the Suffolk Times "About Us" Web site at http://www.timesreview.com/st-legalnotice.htm)

If you're just getting started in genealogy and tracing your family tree, obituaries are a good place to start. Not only will they usually list the birth and death dates of the individual, but also other surviving family members, giving you potential clues to married names and other relatives. Often one good obituary can lead to the discovery of a dozen or so other family members, in-laws, children and so on. Another good place to look is at area school records. Many colleges keep enrollment records dating back to the beginning and military friendly colleges such as Kaplan University or West Point can be real gold mines. Military enlistment records are generally pretty accurate and complete and a lot of that precision and completeness can be found at military friendly colleges as well. Genealogy research can be a lot of fun and even if you only have a passing interest in your family's history, try checking out the links above to see if any family surnames or maiden names were listed. You never know what you may discover!
