While the Rev. Joshua Hart appears as one of the early ministers of the Smithtown Presbyterian Church the first settled pastor was Rev. Napthali Daggett.  He was ordained September 18th, 1751, and dismissed at his own request for want of support, November 6th, 1755, soon afterwards becoming connected with Yale College, where he had been elected the first Professor of Divinity, the preceding September.
    During the next twenty years there seems to have been no settled pastor, the Church depending on occasional supplies.
    Rev. Thomas Lewis, Yale, 1760, was employed from 1763 to 1769; and in 1771, Rev. Daniel Avery spent some time here by appointment of the Presbytery. Then was installed the Rev. Joshua Hart, above mentioned, who was dismissed September 6th, 1787, but continued to labor as a stated supply in other congregations on Long Island, for the next twenty years dividing his time between Fresh Ponds and Hempstead, after which his whole time was devoted to the former place.
    Another vacancy then ensued during which occasional supplies were enjoyed. A Mr. Halsey was employed from April, 1793, to June, 1795; and for a few months afterwards, a Mr. Perkins.
    In October, 1796, Rev. Luther Gleason commenced preaching here and at Islip, or Huntington South, being installed September 28th, 1797. He abruptly left the Presbytery and was suspended from the ministry August 20th, 1807, and finally deposed October 16th, following. The church became split and for several years was destitute of preaching a greater part of the time.
    For the six months following November, 1809, Rev. Nathaniel S. Prime divided his time between this church and the one at Freshpond. In September, 1811, Rev. Bradford Marcy commenced preaching here and at. Babylon and he remained until August, 1814, having brought about the reunion of the two churches. Sometime in 1815 Rev. Henry Fuller began preaching and was ordained October 23rd, 1816, as  pastor of the united churches of Smithtown and Freshpond and was dismissed in 1821. Then followed Rev. Richard F Nicoll who came in 1822, was ordained June 25th, 1823, and dismissed June 5th, 1827. On September 9th, 1827, Rev. Ithamar Pillsbury commenced his labors here, but he was not installed until April 21st, 1830. He was dismissed April 17th, 1833.
    Editor's  note:  Rev Ithamar Pillsbury was born August 22, 1794 in Dracut, Middlesex, Massachusetts.  He died on  April 20, 1862 in Andover, Henry Co., Illinois. He was Pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Smithtown, N.Y.between 1827-33 and preached one year at Sag Harbor, L.I.,1834-5.
    A brief vacancy then followed during which the church was supplied by different individuals among whom were a Mr. Alvord and a Mr. Lockwood.
    In April, 1835, Rev. James P. Edwards commenced preaching here and was installed May 5th, following. He remained until 1852, and was followed, by, Rev. Rutgers Van Brunt, who resigned in 1856 and was followed by Rev. Ezra F. Munday. He was succeeded in 1861 by Rev. S. H. McMullen and he, in turn, by Rev James Sinclair. Then came Rev. Henry A. Porter' who remained six years and was followed by Rev. Henry A. Lewis and next by Rev. J. O. Gray.
    The records of this church are incomplete. Those printed were taken from various copies of  “The Record, 1913” as copied by Mrs. Charles Hilton Brown and her brother, Mr. Charles Embree Lawrence as well as the Records transcribed from Micro film of the work of Nellie Scudder.
