Huntington Rural Cemetery

One of the oldest "rural cemeteries" in Suffolk County, Huntington Rural Cemetery was established in 1853, during the "Rural Cemetery" movement of pre-Civil War America. A modern index to burials, but not to gravestone inscriptions, is found in the 1998 publication "Index to the Huntington Rural Cemetery 1853-1990," issued by the Huntington Historical Society. Please contact the Society if you wish to purchase a copy of this valuable work. The cemetery is located south of Huntington Village, with a main entrance on New York Avenue - NY 110. An addition entrance to the cemetery is from Oakwood Avenue. This large commercial cemetery extends from New York Avenue west to Oakwood Avenue and covers many acres.

As with many "rural cemeteries" across the country, burials from older family or farm cemeteries were moved to Huntington Rural Cemetery over the decades. Thus you will find dates long before 1853, some back into the 18th century, among the burials in this cemetery.

The information submitted to this site by David Roberts is from two sources: 1) an inventory done in December 1913 by William A. Eardeley of Brooklyn, N. Y., assisted by Frank E. Rapp of New York City; and 2) individual gravestone inscriptions copied by the submitter (David Roberts) at various times from the mid-1970s through the mid 1980s. Most of these inscriptions involved individuals descended from the submitter's distant ancestor Thomas Conklin [1704-1793] of Huntington. Material in brackets [   ] was added by the submitter from his Conklin Family Notes, his published "Deaths Reported by the 'Long Islander' 1878-1890" or his on-line "Deaths Reported by the 'Long Islander' 1891-1900"
available on-line at this site.

NOTE:
I decided to add at least the WOODs to "Find-a-Grave" and while doing so I went to both my 1891-1900 Obits & the Huntington Rural Cemetery Index to further check on those listed in Eardeley's 1913 transcription.

According to Sarah's 1893 obit she had a deceased daughter CARRIE Lowery Wood. The Index gives her as Caroline L. & the burial date given matches the death date of "CHARLES" Lowery Wood, p. 46.

The same obit says Sarah had a deceased daughter JOSIE Wood & gives the year of her death - 1872. That matches with the Index's "Josie Gentry" & the dates line up w/ "JOSEPH Gentry" Wood, p. 46

You might want to change or at least note:
Charles Lowery Wood = Caroline L. or Carrie Lowey Wood
Joseph Gentry Wood = Josie Gentry Wood

SILLS Corrections
Washington Bryant Sills was born abt 1815  and Mary Louise Mead Jones Sills, his wife was born 3-22-1828.  That puts the dates listed in question as secondary sources.

Those who died before 1853 were moved to Huntington Rural from some other cemetery/burial ground.
I can't figure the relationship of the 2 Wood sisters to the rest of these people.
Maria Conklin, first wife of Gilbert Platt  isn't the mother of H. Maria Platt. Maria died in 1816; H. Maria wasn't born until 1822. Yet H. Maria's parents aren't here, but her father's first wife is ? strange
BUT Gilbert Platt's second wife Ida Wood was the mother of Hannah Maria Platt.  Ida Wood was was the sister of the two Wood's buried in the Downs plot.  I have not been able to connect this line of Jeremiah Wood and Deborah Helme to the rest of our Huntington Wood's.  Report attached.

I'm guessing that William L. 1842-1913 was the son of William T.'s first wife Harriet.
My 1878-1890 says H. Maria had a daughter Mrs. Emma Carter
Interesting grouping of people in this lot; I actually alphabetized the group; Phebe H. Wood was the first one I copied, followed by Harriet L. Downs; no order - but I might have copied in a weird manner
