OBADIAH HAVENS-6001 (M23 p 243): son of George-502 & Patience (Booth) Havens born 1747 bp Jan 19-21 1755 died Aug 22 1786-7 (R13, 14, 22), married ca 1769.70 Phebe (?) Havens b 1750-1 d Jun 15 1830; she m 2) May 8 1800 Capt. Stephen Howell of Sag Harbor (R14); issue:

Phebe-7001 b May 27 1771 m June 14 1806 John Tiley/Tyler Havens-6032
Clarissa-7002 b Jul 4 1773 m Jan 26 1796 Thadeus Fordham.

Church records (R22) say that all the children except George-7006 were baptized Oct 18 1786, two months after their father died and shortly before George was born - "children of widow Phebe Havens of Shelter Island."

Obadiah was listed in the Shelter Island census of 1771 for one male between 16 and 60, one under 16, three females over 16, and one under. In the 1776 census for that place he had four males over 16, three females over 16, and three under. As he died in 1786, he was not listed in the 1790 census, but his widow was: two males under 16 and five females, all on Shelter Island.

He signed the Association for Shelter Island in 1775 (R7). He held many town offices - fence viewer in 1774, overseer of the poor in 1776, 1778, 1779, 1781, fence viewer again in 1782, and overseer of the poor again 1784-5.

He died intestate: Feb 7 1787 Obadiah, yeoman, widow Phebe administratrix (R10). His ;tone is in the Shelter Island Presbyterian Church cemetery: August 1787 ae 40; also his Widow's stone: June 1830 ae 80,

GORGE HAVENS-6004 son of George-502 & Patience (Booth) Havens ca 1752 (based on sibling dates), bap Dec 1753 (R22) d before 1790, married Nov 22 1781 Lucretia Denison; no record of issue.

Mather says he was probably from Sag Harbor. He was, however, listed in the Shelter Island 1771 for one male between 16 and 60, one female over 16, and one under 16. The 1776 census him one male over 50, two over 16, one under, two females over 16, one under, putting him in Southampton. He evidently died before 1790, for he is not listed in that census.

JOHN HAVENS-6005: son of George-502 & Patience (Booth) Havens born died Oct 6 1769, but the records (R8, 13, 16), say he drowned Oct 6 1789, ae 34, together with Samuel Stratton and Sidney Havens-6046 .

We have almost no information on him. There is, however, definite confusion with John-538 b about the same time (R14).

Archibald Havens (R23) said this John was probably from Shelter Island.

JONATHAN HAVENS-6006: son of George-502 & Patience (Booth) Havens born ca 1755 (based on sibling dates), baptized Jan 19 1755 (R14) died May 2 1771, married Susannah Horton; issue:

Silas 7772  m Proculah ----: d after 1750.
Patience-7173 d after 1750

Salmon Records (R16) list Joshua Horton as having married "Suaner" Havens Apr 20 1775.  I had difficulty in identifying this woman, and she could have been the widow of this Jonathan for he predeceased her. If this is true, the Sarah Havens given as the niece of Jemima (Havens)
Hudson by Craven (R5) could have been the daughter of Jonathan and Susannah above. His will, Shelter Island Mar30 1771 proved May25 1771: wife Susannah, son Silas, daughter Patience, both under age. (R10).

JONATHAN NICOLL HAVENS-6008: son of Nicoll-505 & Sarah (Fosdick) Havens, born Jan 13-18 (Jun 18) 1757 died Oct 20-25 1799 ae 42, unmarried.

He was a very civic-minded citizen, not only of his town but also the state and nation, subject of an extensive tribute by MaIlman. Although he never married, he was very active in public affairs and politics. He first served as clerk of the Shelter Island town board, in 1783; he was elected supervisor in 1787, holding the post and other offices until 1792. In 1786 he was elected to the N.Y. state assembly from Suffolk County, serving until 1795. In 1788 he was a member of the state convention for the ratification of the U.S. constitution. He was a state justice of the peace in 1795. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1797, serving until 1799, year of his death.

He signed the Association in Shelter Island in 1775 (R7). He was listed in the 1790 census there as head of a family containing two males over 16 and two females.

He died intestate, and letters were issued to his sister Sarah Dering, wife of Sylvester; Mary Havens a bondswoman (R10). He is buried in the Shelter Island Presbyterian Church cemetery: November 1799 ae 42 (R8).

Munsell says he was noted as a statesman and philosopher (R19).

I have found almost no information on Walter-6018 except the data given above and a negative notation by Mather that he is not Capt. Walter, a distinction he gives to Walter-522. He is, however, found in the 1790 census for Southampton: one male over 16, one under, and three females, confirmed by above statistics. He is also listed there in 1790; one each males over 45, between 10 & 16 & under 10, females over 45, 26-45, 16-26, 10-16, under 10.

His will, Jan 21 1839 (Liber H p 109) mentions son Jonathan dau Maria sisters Abby Munsell, Jennet & Harriet, also Harriet Munsell; codicil Jun 13 1839 mentions bro Gabriel of New York City, recently dec.

Remington was another Shelter Islander. A Remington Havens, mariner, of Shelter Island died interstate and his widow Rebecca was appointed administratrix in 1818 (R10). I have no record of his marrying a Rebecca, and Jemima Tuthill survived him, according to MaIlman. Yet there is a curious temporal accord between his death date and that of the appointment of administratrix.

He was a town trustee in 1814 - but that may have been the other Remington, if such there was.

The Archibald Havens and Osborn Shaw mss (R23) list him before his brother Peter, who was born in 1775. He was a bondsman for the estate of his father, settled in 1798. Nothing else is known of him except what is found in the Havens-Shaw mss, which say he owned the easterly side of Pine Neck. which would put him in Brookhaven - as would be expected, for his father was a Brookhaven man.

PETER HAVENS-6068 (R23):son of John-530 & Rebecca (Smith) Havens, born May 11 775 died May 8-18 1822, married Deborah Bartow/Barteau b Feb29 1780 d May 1 1866 (R23); issue:

The Havens-thaw mss CR23) give us the only information we have: he conveyed land in Moriches prior to 1814. He is buried in the Bartow burying ground, South Haven: "Our parents Peter Havens b May 1 1775 d May 18 1822 - Deborah Bartow wife of Peter Havens b Feb 29 1780 d May 1 1866." There is another stone for the two children. He was living in Brookhaven in 1814.

It will be seen from the above that this family group was rather more than usual in its intermarriage with other Havenses. The mother of Augustus-6073 was herself a Havens by birth (Phebe-529), and two of Augustus' children married Havenses. We know little about him otherwise except that he was mentioned in the will of his father, 1826.

NATHANIEL S HAVENS-6076: son of Joseph-534 & Phebe (Havens) Havens, born Sep 18 1778 died Mar 24 1829, married Nov 2 1807 at Sag Harbor Abigail Stewart (R14). Issue:

All we know of Nathaniel is that he was mentioned in his father's will, 1826.

JACOB HAVENS-6077: son of Joseph-534 & Phebe (Havens) Havens, born Mar 25 1783 died Dec 23 1819, married Elizabeth Bennet d Jul 12 1848 (R14) da Jeremiah & Elizabeth (Van Scoy) Bennet; issue:

JOSEPH CALEB HAVENS-6078: son of Joseph-534 & Phebe (Havens) Havens, born Oct 3 1786 died Jun 17 1842 unmarried. His will 1842 Shelter Island (Liber 4) mentions sister Cynthia, niece Phebe Tuthitl wife of Ezra, Joseph C, Benedict, Bethiah M., Samuel A., Cynthia E., Charles A., Austin S., Charles A., Jacob T., William W., Nancy M., Esther S., Adeline, and Sarah A. Cartwright, and Phebe E. Tuthill (R10). He was an executor of his father's will.

WILLIAM (?) HAVENS-6082 (R14): son of William-535 & Desire (Havens) Havens is little more than a conjecture. His father is reported to have had two sons born before 1776, one of them probably William. We do find a William B. Havens listed in the Suffolk Gazette (R14) May 7 1808 as having died at Sag Harbor ae 49, and he could have been this hypothetical William. It is significant that his mother - if she was his mother -died at Sag Harbor in 1830.

JOHN BRADIC/BRADDOCK HAVENS-6097 (R28): son of Benjamin-541 & Abigail (Moore) Havens, born ca 1773 (based on sibling dates & census data), married Eunice Gardner m2) ---; issue 1st marriage:

Hiram-7103 "some years ago a wealthy sugar planter in Cuba" (R28).
Philena-7104 died young.
John-7105 father of O.P. Havens of Florida.
William-? 7106
Benjamin-7107
Susan-7108 died young.
Carrie-7109 m Rev. Hiram Post of Sing Sing, N.Y.
Sallie-7110 died unmarried.
Mary-7111 m William Delamater of New York; they had Sarah, known in later generations of the family as Aunt Sarah/Sadie.

John was an Orange Co., N.Y. man, listed in the 1800 census: two males and two females. In the 1810 census there were two males between 27 and 45, one between 17 and 26, three under ten, one female between 27 and 45 and one over 45. The female over 45 in the 1810 census may have been his second wife, the mother of one of his wives, or some other relative. She was not his mother Abigail, for Abigail was listed as head of her own household (R28).

DAVID HAVENS-6098 (R28): son of Benjamin-541 & Abigail (Moore) Havens born Jul 12-Dec 7 1777, married ca 1802 (estimated from children's birth dates) Elizabeth Aldrich da Silas & Hannah (Williams) Aldrich; issue:

David-6098 was an Orange County, N.Y. man. In 1807 he bought a small lot in New Windsor. In 1813-1843 he served as inspector of schools for a few terms.

He was not listed in the 1800 census, for he probably was not yet married but was still living with his mother, whose census figures confirm this. He was, however, listed in the 1810 census for one male between 27 and 45, one between 17 and 26, one below ten, one female between 17 and 26 and two below ten. The male between 17 and 26 may have been his mysterious brother Selah, if still living, for his mother Abigail at that time was living alone, according to the census. (R28).

BENJAMIN HAVENS-6102 (R28): son of Benjamin-541 & Abigail (Moore) Havens, born Jan 6 1785-7 died May 28 1877 ae 91, married Letitia  Schriver; issue:

Jackson M-7118 he worked for a New York bank clearing house.
Daughter-7219 she lived in Richmond, Va.

This Benjamin was Uncle Benny, patron saint of the West Point Military Academy. He ran a tavern in the vicinity which was visited by students. A song "Benny Havens-O" was composed in his honor and is still sung by the students. An old newspaper obituary article from the N. Y. Sun of Jun 2 1877 gives him the children listed above.

SELAH HAVENS-6103 (R28): son of Benjamin-541 & Abigail (Moore) Havens, was probably born ca 1790, based on sibling dates and the fact that he was listed last of the children.

My family records say he died unmarried, but there is a complete lack of further information except a mention in the will of his Uncle Nathaniel-544 , who left Selah "all my fast estate." Inasmuch as Nathaniel lived in Moriches, Long Island, and Selah grew up in Orange County - presumably - the bequest seems odd unless Selah had left home and gone to Long Island. None of Selah's siblings were mentioned in the will in question.

Selah was living with his mother at the time of the 1800 census, but he was not living with her in 1810. This may support the possibility that he had gone to Long Island - or he may have died. Also, he may have been living with his brother David-6098 above, who had a male in his household between the ages of 17 and 26, and Selah's age at that time, if I have estimated his birth correctly, would have been in that bracket.

JEREMIAH HAVENS-6106 (R23, 39): son of John-542 & Abigail (Bostwick) Havens, born Moriches Jul 6 1774 died Feb 11 1862 (1864 ae 88) married Mar 6 1795 Bethiah Youngs b Jul 10 1776 d Mar 5 1849 da Deacon (& Capt) David & Elizabeth (Tucker) Youngs of Moriches; issue

The above record from MaIlman is considerably amplified by information from a Youngs family genealogy (R39). The same source says that Jeremiah-6106 was a carpenter and farmer who was born and married in Moriches and later moved to Jefferson, Schoharie Co., N.Y. after Mar 6 1795. This is confirmed by the Osborn Shaw ms (R23), giving his death date, "leaving a large family." The Young family record (op cit) gives a death date of 1864.

CHARLES H. HAVENS-6110 (R14): son of John-542 & Abigail (Bostwick) Havens, born Dec 4-14 1784, married 1808 at Easthampton Betsy Sherry/Sherrill da Jacob & Recompense Sherry/Sherrill; issue:

Robert Emmet-7131 m Mary Eldridge.
Juliet-7132 died unmarried.
Mary-7133 m Charles Little.

A Dr. Charles M. Havens of Staten Island, who died intestate in 1829, had a brother John of Brookhaven appointed administrator (RiO). If it were not for the difference in middle initials, Dr. Charles could be Charles-6110, for he had a brother John, and that is the only pair of those names I have been able to find in this generation. However, Dr. Charles H. Havens is identified as the Charles H. Havens who was elected to the N.Y. State Assembly in 1818 and 1820. (R49).

COL. JOHN HAVENS-6111 (R19, 20, 53): son of John-542 & Abigail (Bostwick) Havens, born Nov 14 1787 died Apr 24 1850, married Sept 17 1823 Eliza Ketchum born Jan 3 1796 d May 11863; da Scudder & Eliza/Elizabeth (Rose) Ketchum of Huntington; issue:
