Commack Methodist Episcopal Churchyard
The following Data was submitted by David  Roberts
These are burials at the Commack Methodist Episcopal Churchyard Cemetery, next to but separate from the
Commack "Commercial" Cemetery

The present Commack United Methodist Church is one of the oldest Methodist congregations in New York State. The old church, built in 1789, is the oldest standing United Methodist church building in New York State. The old church and its churchyard are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The following list is derived from two sources sent to me by the Church Historian, Commack United Methodist Church. One was an inventory published by Janice T. Woods in 1984 as part of the Bicentennial Celebration of the founding of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States, established in 1784 at Lovely Lane Chapel, Baltimore, Maryland. The other listing was done as an Eagle Scout Project in 1992 by Christopher C. Jarvis. Both lists were checked against the data on pp. 82 - 85, volume 3,  of LDS Microfilm Roll # 0017925

The Methodist Episcopal [M. E.] Church merged in 1939 with the Methodist Episcopal Church, South [M. E., South] and the Methodist Protestant [M. P.] Church to form The Methodist Church. In 1968, The Methodist Church merged with the Evangelical United Brethren [E. U. B.] Church to form the present United Methodist Church. The Commack congregation had been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, the larger of the Methodist groups in the Northern United States until the 1939 merger. Thus the use of the historic name for this cemetery.
