PETTY CEMETERY - Old Post Road Family Burying Ground  Port Jefferson
#107 in the Brookhaven Town Historian's Book - Located on the south side of Old Post Road

     Petty Private graveyard, on the hill south side of the Lower Road from Mt Sinai to Port Jefferson, about 300 feet in the woods nearly opposite the large rock or boulder, on the north side of said road, and about 1/4 mile west of the residendce of Joseph Bennett, Mount Sinai.  Near the two graves noted in this record, there is at least one other grave marked with a small field stone at its head.  There are possibly other graves.  (Osborne Shaw abt 1939)
     Some of tyhe following is taken from a notebook compiled by Selah H. Tooker in 1940.  Additional information was provided by the Brookhave Town Historian's office as compiled by Osborne Shaw as well as information provided by William Petty of Mt Sinai.  Tombstones were in place as of 1951


Capt Elisha Petty   9 Nov 1819   44 yr   Drowned 
    NOTE: Capt. Elisha Petty was a sea Captain.  His wife is reported to have remarried and is buried elsewhere.  Elizabeth Petty is believed to be his mother.  Maria Petty was a daughter of Elisha.  Capt Elisha also had three sons:  Elisha, Daniel, and Julian.  It is not known, at this time (1985), if they were buried in this cemetery.
