My grandfather was Lawrence Gernert. He was born
in Rochester and when the Spanish American War broke out, he enlisted in
the 7th Battery, Light Artillery, N.Y. Volunteers. He left for Camp
Black out on Long Island on July 27, 1898. The war ended quickly and
his unit was granted 30 day furloughs. They arrived back in Rochester
on September 16th and the men were mustered out on November 30, 1898.
The 7th Battery, Light Artillery, N.Y. Volunteers was dissolved.
I have attached 2 photos that were taken at Camp Black.
My grandfather is in both. He is the middle person (sitting down) in
the photo in front of the tent. In the photo of the cook shed, he is
the 3rd from the left (spooning something into his mouth).
