wood chopper with one arm who lived in a hut with his son James Gaffney; “the 

father and the son were often seen in a druken condition on our [Oyster Bay’s] 

streets .... the men went by the name of Gaffney, but the son said that their real 

name was Ward”

1885) and Henry Gaines; m. third ca. 1888 Mary Fowler; b. 4 February 1812; 

grew up in Huntington; studied real estate law in New York City;  into practice in 

1837; lived in New York City until 1861; afterwards he lived summers in 

Huntington and winters in New York City 1861-1866; resident of Huntington 

since 1866; Democrat who voted for every Democratic candidate for President 

since  Andrew Jackson’s second election; trustee of Huntington Rural Cemetery; 

member of Huntington Board of Education; president of Huntington Public 

Library Association; President of Long Island Bible Society; trustee of Second 

Presbyterian Church, Huntington; amateur astronomer; long obit in 8 December 

1894 paper
